    Job Description and Key Responsibilities including Virtual/Remote Expectations:

    Position Summary

    The Graduate Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting the institution's commitment to accessibility and compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This position will primarily focus on creating documentation, assisting faculty and staff with accessibility challenges, and remediating course content to ensure an inclusive learning environment for all students.

    Responsibilities

    • Documentation Creation: Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation related to accessibility best practices, guidelines, and procedures. This may include creating user guides, training materials, and policy documents.
    • Faculty and Staff Support: Provide direct support to faculty and staff regarding accessibility issues in their course materials and teaching practices. This includes answering questions, offering guidance on accessibility tools, and conducting workshops or training sessions.
    • Course Content Remediation: Review and remediate existing and new course content to ensure it meets accessibility standards. This involves converting inaccessible formats, adding alternative text to images, ensuring proper heading structures, and other tasks as needed.
    • Accessibility Testing: Conduct accessibility testing on various digital platforms, including learning management systems and institutional websites, to identify and report accessibility barriers.
    • Research and Best Practices: Stay informed about current accessibility standards, technologies, and best practices, particularly related to higher education and Title II compliance.
    • Meeting Participation: Attend and contribute to relevant meetings, such as accessibility committee meetings or project team discussions.
    • Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned to support the institution's accessibility initiatives.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications

    • Currently enrolled in a graduate program at SUNY Oswego.
    • Basic understanding of accessibility principles and standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1 AA).
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
    • Proficiency in common office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace).

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with learning or content management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, Drupal).
    • Experience with accessibility testing tools and methodologies.
    • Knowledge of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
    • Familiarity with assistive technologies and their use.
    • Basic understanding of HTML.
    • Able to work both remotely and on site.

    • Cultivate research and critical thinking skills related to emerging technologies and accessibility: The GA will stay informed about new accessibility tools and methodologies, contributing to a deeper understanding of the field.

    • Develop collaborative and independent work skills within a professional setting: The position requires both autonomous work and participation in team discussions, fostering professional development in a university environment.

    Familiarity with various learning and content management systems: The GA will likely work with platforms such as Brightspace and  Drupal, gaining practical experience with these widely used systems.
