Eligibility Requirements

To hold this assistantship, students must:

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0.
  • Be registered for at least 9 graduate credits during each term of the assistantship.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time graduate student in good academic standing.
  • Current enrollment in a graduate degree or certificate program
  • Successful candidates must be able to start on August 21, 2026 - position is for fall and spring 2026-2027 only academic semesters.

Additional eligibility or program-specific requirements may apply as outlined by the Graduate Department and the appointing department.

Position Overview

The Office of the Dean of Students (ODS) Graduate Assistant will work in the Office of the Dean of Students supporting the office, programs and services related to basic needs support and outreach.

This is a 20 hours per week Assistantship for Fall and Spring semesters. Duties require in- person and remote work as well as occasional weekend or evening work (programs and training).

The Dean of Students Office is dedicated to providing programs and services to students that support healthy choices, support students in transition, and foster a community of mutual respect and integrity so that students can be successful. This position will support student success and in particular will provide information, resources and services to connect students to resources, programs and emergency funds that will support their academic, personal and professional success.

SUNY Oswego’s Office of the Dean of Students (ODS) champions the student experience, ensures student success, and offers dynamic student engagement opportunities that ensure an inclusive, healthy, and safe learning environment for all students. Our team advocates for students as they navigate personal and educational challenges and responds to the emerging needs of our diverse students. The ODS supports a holistic network of care and cultivates collaborative partnerships to forward campus-wide efforts that integrate academic and student life; seeks to ensure that sufficient support networks for all students exist; engage with students in their campus communities; and support the implementation of a campus-wide focus on well-being.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with a variety of basic needs including but not limited to transportation, housing security, food security, child care and technology access.
  • Serve on campus committees as needed
  • Assist in walking students through the emergency funding process. 
  • Connect students with resources and services both on and off campus
  • Connect with campus departments across campus
  • Check in students that come to the ODS office
  • Support with all ODS Outreach activities
  • Support ODS office functions as needed with other student workers
  • Serve as a student voice during decision-making
  • Must be able to table during the day and some afternoons

Required Qualifications

  • Desire to work with those experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity.
  • Have a knowledge of on and off campus transportation options.
  • Must be a full time graduate student and matriculated in a graduate degree or certificate program
  • Have excellent communication skills including presentation skills 
  • Work as a team member with high levels of empathy and confidentially
  • Possess good organizational skills, effective time management and strong written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Title II accommodations 
  • Able to create and edit social media content for ODS
  • Proficient attention to detail
  •  Evident leadership and organizational skills
  • Positive attitude
  • Advanced interpersonal and communication skills    

Expectations

  • The GA will report to the Assistant Dean and will attend weekly one on one meetings, will attend Student Affairs and ODS meetings, trainings and events as the schedule permits.  
  • Maintain good working relationships with staff, faculty and students
  • Participation in Divisional leadership training or other professional development as schedule allows
  • Serve as liaison with student organizations and student leaders
  • Support College policies and guidelines

  • Work collaboratively with the other GAs to brainstorm, create and implement programming 
  • Maintain confidentiality in a student-centered office
  • Run and operate the front desk in Culkin 501 if needed
